Welcome to the 2018–19 school year at Sands Montessori! My name is Krystan Krailler, and I’m excited to serve as president of the Sands Montessori Parent Organization (SMPO) this year. SMPO works together to strengthen the Sands Montessori community of life-long learners. All parents/legal guardians, adults living with a Sands student, teachers and staff are automatically members – including you!
Our meetings are held the third Tuesday of every month (August-May), usually in the Media Center at 7 p.m. Meetings are open to all and you are welcome and encouraged to attend! Our first SMPO meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21. This meeting will also serve as the General Parent Meeting; we’ll review and vote on the budget for the year and every member of the SMPO in attendance can vote.
SMPO hosts community-building and fundraising events throughout the year. Last year, we raised $34,800 to fund a bus for each classroom to go on a field trip, scholarships for after school classes for our students, planners for 9-12 students, more than $12,000 directly to 41 classrooms/specialists at Sands to purchase needed items, and no-cost community events like the skating party, STEM Night, Family Reading Night, International Night and more. We can’t do it without your support!
Our school thrives when families are engaged with all that goes on at Sands. We invite you to get involved in any way that you can. There are volunteer opportunities for as little as one hour at an event, spending an hour a week tutoring a student in math or reading, joining us for a monthly SMPO meeting, volunteering to coach a basketball or soccer team, being a classroom helper, and more. There is something for everyone – with every time commitment – available. Please feel free to invite grandparents, aunts, uncles and family friends to join us as a volunteer! It takes a community to do all we do.
Visit www.sandsparents.org to stay up-to-date on events, find information about SMPO meetings and more, services offered by SMPO and to sign up for our weekly email. I welcome your ideas and questions about SMPO and look forward to seeing you this year!
